Caring for stoneware, so it lasts a lifetime

Everyday habits that keep your dinner plates, mugs and vases looking as good as the day they arrived.

Caring for stoneware, so it lasts a lifetime

Stoneware is fired at around 1,200°C, which is what makes it so durable and so easy to live with. A few small habits will keep it looking beautiful for decades.

Wash gently. Stoneware is dishwasher safe, but if you stack heavy plates directly on top of each other in a hot dishwasher, the glaze can eventually develop tiny scratches. Slide a felt disc or a folded paper towel between plates when you store them.

Warm slowly. Cold stoneware straight into a very hot oven can crack. If you use it for baking, let it come to room temperature first, or place it in a cold oven and warm both together.

Enjoy the crazing. Over the years you may notice a fine network of hairline lines in the glaze. That is called crazing and is completely normal on hand-glazed pieces. It does not affect food safety.

If a plate does chip, keep it. Repairing a chip with food-safe epoxy or, in the Japanese tradition, gold-dust kintsugi, turns damage into something even more beautiful.
